The Blue Mountains Golf Tour, NSW

The Blue Mountains Golf Tour, NSW

Want to hit the ball further? Here’s a tip: play golf in the Blue Mountains. The region’s elevation is good for as much as an extra club through the air… not that you really need it, as most of the Blue Mountains golf courses are short, compact and far longer on charm than they are for total length. It’s a little cooler than most parts of Sydney, which helps make this region a cool destination whatever the time of year.

In a region known for its stunning views, players must also show a little artistry to navigate the courses across the Blue Mountains. More than anything, it’s a place to venture for a breath of fresh air and a change of pace – all on the outskirts of Australia’s largest city.

Best golf courses in the Blue Mountains

Two-night/two-round packages start from $249 per person and include the region’s two most picturesque courses: Blackheath and Wentworth Falls. Meanwhile, staying at Leisure Inn Spires at Leura positions you in a cool little town that’s within easy reach of all the Blue Mountains courses and other attractions.

Blackheath Golf Club

The pick of the Blue Mountains courses is Blackheath Golf & Community Club. Laid out across a gently undulating piece of property, the course calls for steady accuracy and, on several occasions, the ability to judge uphill and downhill shots. Most of all, though, it’s just a genuinely pleasant place to spend four or five hours within a rich array of native flora.

Wentworth Falls

Wentworth Falls is another typically tight but beautiful course with fairways cantered in a variety of directions. Once again length is not a necessity, but the ability to manoeuvre the ball away from or around the established treelines is definitely a welcome skill.

The four holes nearest the clubhouse are among the most notable. The 377-metre opener begins from an elevated tee with a very narrow driving zone below, framed by water on the right and a stand of trees on the left.

The 10th fairway climbs the same hill in reverse as it wends towards a wicked, two-tiered green before the 188-metre 11th ventures back downhill. The 18th measures only 270 metres, but plays sharply uphill and the elevated green will be blind on your approach, even if it is from only 40 or 50 metres away.

Leura Golf Club

If two courses aren’t enough to satisfy your appetite, then add Leura to your list – especially the back nine. The inward half at Leura not only unveils some of the best holes on the course, it also provides the best snapshot of the region. The 14th green is set flush against a cliff overlooking the pristine Jamison Valley in what is unquestionably the best view in the Blue Mountains.

Where to stay

Leisure Inn Spires is set on more than a hectare of land in central Leura and offers players an apartment accommodation set-up in a convenient location.

Leisure Inn Spires features studio rooms as well as self-contained one and two-bedroom apartments and is a short drive from several of the region’s most famous attractions, including the Three Sisters, Scenic World and its cliffhanger ride, Prince Henry Cliff Walk, Wentworth Falls and Leura Cascades walking track.
